Whirls of colorful ruffled dresses, waving fans, long fringed shawls, explosions of clicking castanets, strumming guitars, stamping feet — the essence of flamenco. An art form that passionately expresses many of our everyday feelings—happiness, loneliness, and anger.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of the nation’s premier flamenco and
Spanish dance companies in their 32nd season. They believe that the universal spirit of flamenco, a multicultural art form, has the power to build bridges between cultures and inspire audiences from diverse backgrounds.

Flamenco as we know it today was influenced by the many peoples who inhabited southern Spain: the Arab, Jews, Gypsies and Andalucians. Flamenco became popular in the 18th century. The gypsies who settled in Spain came from India, and brought with them the culture of their home land as well as the influences they picked up through their travels west. Flamenco bears the influences of these gypsy people as well as the Arabs and the Jews. At one time, it was thought that the term “flamenco” derived from the Arabic word “fela-mengu” meaning “fugitive peasant,” but the exact origins of the word are unknown.

Carlota Santana, Artistic Director and Founder, has been designated “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine in recognition of her commitment to creating new works and developing young artists and choreographers. Most recently, Ms. Santana was honored by the Government of Spain with La Cruz de la Orden al Merito Civil for “all the years of excellence and dedication to the flamenco art.”

As the child of Country Music Royalty, Pam Tillis was determined from a young age to find her own way in music as a singer and songwriter. Pam fell in love with music early. Band, chorus, talent shows, church and the creative community of Nashville all helped to shape the young singer. Growing up, Pam was in a variety of bands, spanning from jazz and alternative country to top 40.

After much soul searching, Tillis made the commitment to make an honest country record. The album “Put Yourself In My Place” yielded 2 number ones, 2 top five singles, and one top twenty hit, and in its first year the album was certified gold. Tillis followed with 3 platinum albums on Arista “Homeward Looking Angel” in 1992, “Sweethearts Dance” in 1994 and an Arista “Greatest Hits” in 1997. Tillis achieved 6 number 1 songs during this time including “Shake the Sugar Tree”, “Mi Vida Loca”, “When You Walk In The Room”, “In Between Dances” “Don’t Tell Me What To Do” and “Maybe It Was Memphis” while 14 of Pam’s other singles landed in the top ten and top twenty.
