The Pirate! and The Firebird!

June 2 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Presented by Everybody Can DANCE & Santa Maria Civic Ballet

The Pirate, or Le Corsaire, tells the adventurous story of Medora, a Greek girl in love with the pirate, Conrad. She is very beautiful and two of Conrad’s crew conspire to kill Conrad and kidnap Medora to sell her into slavery. Medora saves Conrad’s life, but loses her freedom. Conrad vows to rescue her and races off with his faithful first mate Ali to have his revenge.

The slavers, Lankedem and Birbanto, bring Medora and their other captives to the Pasha Seyd, king of the Ottomans, who purchases Medora for his harem. Medora befriends another slave, Gulnare, and they dance together in the Pasha’s Garden of Delights. Conrad and his pirates enter the Pasha’s palace disguised as religious pilgrims, but when the guards bow their heads to pray, the pirates knock them out! Leaving the treacherous Lankedem and Birbanto behind to face punishment for their crimes, Conrad and Medora, and Ali and Gulnare sail off for new adventures.

Stravinsky’s Firebird tells the legend of the sorcerer Koschei the Deathless, who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for eternal life. Young princesses are held captive in his castle, and Koschei turns anyone who tries to rescue them into stone. Many unlucky men have been caught before. The Firebird is chased into the garden by Prince Ivan, who seeks her feathers; according to legend, a phoenix feather will win any fight.

With the feather in hand, Ivan storms the castle gate to rescue the princesses, but is instantly captured by Koschei who begins to turn Ivan into stone. At the very last moment, Ivan waves the feather in the air, and Firebird comes to the rescue! She bewitches Koschei and his minions to sleep and tells Ivan the secret to breaking Koschei’s immortality: smash the egg that contains his soul. Koschei dies, and all his magic dies with him. The princesses are free, their princes alive once again, and the couples rejoice in the new dawn.

Children ages 3 and up are invited to attend and meet the characters.

General Admission: Adult – $20, Children – $15
