This witty and timeless comedy – set in 1890’s London – is a tale of mistaken identity, social snobbery, and the unpredictable path of love.

The Central Coast Shakespeare Festival has produced plays by Shakespeare and other authors every summer (but one) since 1997. The actors are a mix of local professional and talented amateurs, many of whom are PCPA and AGHS Acting Students.

This video was shot at the Festival’s current home – a natural amphitheater on the grounds of the Filipponi Ranch Winery in San Luis Obispo. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Note: All donations are split equally between the Central Coast Shakespeare Festival and the Clark Center.

Suggested perfect English menu to enjoy while watching this perfect English play:
(Recipes below)

* English Cucumber Sandwiches (eaten by Jack & Algernon in first scene)
* Coronation Chicken Sandwiches (actually served at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II)
* English “Trifle” with Sherry
* White wine from Filipponi Ranch – Chardonnay, Verdelho or Albarino (The Filipponi Ranch is the location for this performance)

Recipes:
English Cucumber Sandwiches:
* Thinly Slice an English hothouse Cucumber. (Peel skin if other kinds used.) Place on paper towels, salt slightly and let drain for half an hour.
* Place in non-metallic Bowl, splash with a little bit of white wine vinegar; salt and pepper to taste.
* Spoon onto fresh, slightly buttered bread with crusts removed.

“Coronation Chicken” Sandwiches
* Mix 1 tbsp, mayonnaise, 1 cup finely chopped chunks of cooked chicken, one chopped green onion, 2 tsp Mango Chutney, 1/2 tsp curry powder. Salt & Pepper to taste.
* Spread onto your favorite bread.

English Trifle with Sherry
In a deep, clear glass bowl (so you can enjoy the layers)
* Make “Birds English Custard Mix”; at least DOUBLE strength so that it will thicken. Let cool with wax paper on top to avoid “skin”.
* Spread raspberry jelly on pound cake slices. Chop into small chunks. Mix in quarter cup (or more?) of Sherry and some peach juice from can
* Arrange cake pieces in bottom of jar. Add in most of the drained peach slices from large can.
* Pour cooled (but still liquid) custard over base. Let chill.
* When firm, add whipped cream to top, and the remaining peach slices.
* Add chocolate sprinkles.
