Formed in Springfield, Missouri in 2008, The HillBenders quickly earned a reputation as a quintet of talented pickers, winning the Telluride Bluegrass Competition in 2009 and the National Single Microphone Competition in 2010. Then a deep dive into the music of The Who as viewed through the prism of Bluegrass brought them even wider acclaim – first with “Tommy: A Bluegrass Opry” and, subsequently, with their hit laden “WhoGrass” show (which San Luis Obispo audiences greeted with a standing ovation at Cal Poly’s Spanos Theater last season).
In 2019, they released their fourth album, produced by Eric Uglum (Ralph Stanley, Alison Krauss, Sara Watkins, Rob Ickes) with 11 tracks all cut live with the entire band, most of them originals, a selection of which will be performed at this concert. Still touring with the original lineup, The HillBenders have stayed true to their roots, respecting tradition while bringing forth a unique energy as one of the most engaging progressive acoustic bands — every concert delivering a perfect mix of virtuoso musicianship and superb vocals.
