Presented by Everybody Can Dance
Everybody Can Dance performed the first Nutcracker ballet on the Central Coast in the Santa Maria Town Center Mall in December, 1987. It’s certainly come a long way since then! Artistic Director Diane Rose Zink has continued to enhance and embellish her production of Tchaikovsky’s glorious ballet, which has become a rite of passage for generations of dancers, and an annual holiday tradition for the community.
It is Christmas Eve, and young Clara Silberhaus is growing up. She is too old now to play with dolls like the other girls at her family’s fabulous Christmas party—she wants to dance with a young man! Clara feels the wonder of first love when her godfather Herr Drosselmeyer presents her with a beautiful wooden nutcracker painted like a soldier. That night after the party, Clara dreams that the nutcracker comes to life and is transformed by her bravery into a handsome prince, who takes her away on an magical journey to feast and revel in the Land of Sweets.
Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker first premiered in 1892, but the ballet did not become the beloved holiday classic we know today until it came to the United States in 1940. Because all but one of the original dances have been lost, it has now become traditional for choreographers to create their own versions of Nutcracker; every version of this ballet you will see is totally different! Diane Rose Zink pays homage to great choreographers of the past in this production: the Sugar Plum pas de deux danced here is the sole survivor of the original 1892 choreography, the French pas de trois was choreographed by great Russian ballerina Agrippina Vaganova for student performers in the 1930s, and Clara’s first dance with her nutcracker was choreographed specially for Diane herself when she performed as Clara in 1974.
For our 35th annual Nutcracker, we are excited to welcome you back to the glory of live performance with new scenes and characters, including a spectacular Russian ribbon dance, all new sets, and a Shooting Star to guide Clara and the Prince on their path to the Land of Sweets.
