Rescheduled from March 2020.

“A band ought to have a sound of its own.  It ought to have a personality.” – Glenn Miller

With timeless hits such as “In the Mood”, “Moonlight Serenade” and many more, few bands have ever had a personality as well-known and well-loved as The Glenn Miller Orchestra.  Decade after decade, the Glenn Miller Orchestra continues to be the number one name in swing jazz.  Get In the Mood for some of the best and most enduring original American music ever made!

Alton “Glenn” Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa in 1904. He got his musical start when his father brought home a mandolin. Glenn promptly traded it for an old battered horn, which he practiced every chance he got.

In 1923, Miller entered the University of Colorado, but soon dropped out to concentrate on a career as a professional musician. Until the mid-1930’s, he toured with several orchestras – including Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey – making his living as a trombonist and arranger.

In 1937, Glenn Miller started his own band, but it was a financial failure and soon disbanded. The second Glenn Miller Orchestra formed in March 1938 and a series of hits soon followed, including “Tuxedo Junction”, “In the Mood”, and “Chattanooga Cho Choo”.

In 1942, Glenn Miller disbanded his orchestra and joined the army. He then organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. This band engaged in hundreds of performances in England. In December 1944, Miller boarded a transport plane to Paris, never to be seen again.

In 1954, Miller was the subject of a partly-fictionalized film biography, The Glenn Miller Story, starring Jimmy Stewart. This revived interest in the band, which was re-created in 1956. The band has been in continuous existence ever since.
